FRITCH - Funeral services for J.T. Draper, Jr., 28, a former Fritch resident who died Wednesday in a Dallas hospital where he had been a patient since May 3, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Southern Baptist Church. He was overcome by gas May 3 in the attempt to rescue a fellow worker.
The Rev. John C. Denton, pastor, and the Rev. F.W. Elmore, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church of Tulia, will officiate.
Interment will be in Westlawn Memorial Cemetery by Simpson's Funeral Home.
Draper, who moved to Dallas five years ago, was a member of a three-man Lone Star Gas Co. crew repairing a leak in a buried gas line when he was injured.
Witnesses said one of the coworkers, inside a hole working on the line, was overcome by the leaking gas and lost consciousness. Draper jumped into the hole and was able to lift the other man to safety before being overcome himself.
The third worker brought help from a nearby fire station and Draper was pulled from the hole and taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital.
Draper was in the intensive care unit there since that time.
He was born in Denison and had lived most of his life in Fritch. He was a veteran of Vietnam war and a member of the Southern Baptist Church in Fritch.
Survivors include his wife, the former Lyncia Langdon; one son, Bryan Jay of the family home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Draper, Sr., of Fritch; and two brothers, Larry Wayne of Dallas and Kenny Dale of Fritch.
Pallbearers will be Dick Hatfield, Buster Hodges, Gary Murrow, Charlie Plumlee, Wayne Hoppe and Ronnie Walton.
Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Lone Star Gas co.
