Dr. W. B. IRVIN, longtime Texas educator and a former superintendent of the Perryton school district, died Monday at the Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. He was 85.
Dr. IRVIN served as superintendent of the Perryton schools from 1925 through 1937. He moved here from Pampa, where he had served as principal and superintendent. From Perryton, he went to Lubbock, where he served as superintendent of schools until 1944. That same year, he became superintendent of the Highland Park school district in Dallas. He held the post for 20 years.
A native of Cross Plains, Dr. IRVIN was prominent in the life and affairs of Hardin-Simmons University for many years. He earned his bachelor and master's degrees from Hardin-Simmons and served on the university's board of trustees from 1959 through 1968 and from 1971 to 1980. He was chairman of the university board for several years ad was serving on its board of development at the time of his death. In 1981, the university recognized his contributions by naming the School of Education after him.
He also was a longtime active member of the First Baptist Church in Dallas, where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and chaired numerous committees.
Dr. IRVIN founded the National Educators Insurance Company and after his retirement from the school business served as its president. In 1969, the company merged with United Fidelity Insurance Co.
He earned his doctorate from the University of Texas, Austin.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sparkman-Hillcrest. Burial followed in the Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Surviving are his wife, Ollie (Jimmie) Camp IRVIN; a brother, R. Briggs IRVIN of Lubbock; and a sister, Pattie ROSCOE of Simpson, Calif.
