----------------
Prominent Los Angeles Citizen Dies Suddenly While Visiting Relatives in Rockdale
----------------
Robert C. Rowland, 45, of Los Angeles, Cal., died suddenly at 5:00 o'clock Tuesday morning at the home of his foster-mother Mrs. J. R. Rowland in this city.
Accompanied by his wife Mr. Rowland was on his summer vacation. They left Los Angeles in theif car on June 17, driving by easy stages to San Antonio thence to Rockdale, arriving this city Monday, June 27, at 1:00 p. m. Mr. Rowland was in excellent health, and spent Monday afternoon visiting old friends in the business district. He retired Monday night in the best of health and spirits. About 5:00 a. m. je awakened his wife and told her that he felt chilly and asked her to close the sleeping room window. After complying with the request Mrs. Rowland spoke to her husband, but found him gasping for breath and unable to reply. Death came almost instantaneously, apparently from heart disease, according to Dr. D. R. Wallis, who was summoned.
Decedent was born in Calvert, Texas, in March 1882. At the age of four years his parents died, and he came to Rockdale to make his home with his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Rowland, who brought him up as one of their own children, and who were all that a father and mother could be to a child. He was a dutiful son, and grew to manhood with all those traits of character indicative of a good citizen and christian gentleman.
On Sept. 4, 1907, he was married to Miss Minnie Cade, of San Antonio, who at that time was teaching in the Rockdale Public Schools. They made their home at Taylor then San Antonio, later at Dallas, and in 1919 moved to Los Angeles, Cal. Mr. Rowland was a cotton man by profession, and went to Los Angeles in the employ of the Federal Department of Agriculture as a specialist in cotton classing. At the time of his death he occupied a similar position with the California State Department of Agriculture. He was a member of the Methodist church at Los Angeles, and was a member of the Masonic fraternity, having continued to maintain his membership with the Rockdale Lodge.
The funeral was held Wednesday, June 29, at 5:00 p. m. under the auspices of Rockdale Lodge No. 414, A. F. & A. M. Religious services were held at the Rowland home, Rev. S. W. Thomas, of Gilmer, a former local minister and friend of the family officiating. Following the religious service the body was taken in charge by his Masonic brethren and conveyed to the Old City Cemtery, where interment was had under the beautiful ritual of that order. Mrs. J. Q. Baldridge sang, "Face to Face," which was one of Mr. Rowland's favorite songs. Active pallbearers were: Messrs. Ben Loewenstein Jr., Con R. Isaacs, B. W. Baldridge, H. G. Perry, C. M. Sessions, and C. M. Perry. Honorary pallbearers were Messrs. J. F. Coffield Jr., Ed A. Swafford, E. T. Kemp, H. G. Murphree, W. E. Gaither and E. F. Ousley.
The death of this good man and former popular citizen came with tragic suddenness, and served to bring forth from the people of Rockdale all those elements of love, helpfulness and sympathy for which they are noted, and which go far to comfort the bereaved wife and mother.
