FRITCH - Alma Charleen Farmer, 84, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Westlawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Berry Loving, senior minister of Pampa First Christian Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Fritch.
Alma Charleen Farmer left her Earthly home Feb. 26, 2008, to join her family and friends who have gone on before her.
Charleen was born April 30, 1923, in Shallowater to Charles and Lillian Kesler. She was the last surviving of their six children. She was preceded in death by sisters Wilder, Thelma and Owatha and brothers Charles, Hewell and Frank.
After graduating from Abernathy High School, she left the family farm to go to work at Childress Air Force Base, where she met her future husband, Fred Smith Farmer. They were wed on Nov. 4, 1944, after Fred returned from serving as a bombardier in the Army Air Corps in the European Theater. They moved to Shamrock, where their three children were born. They moved to Fritch in 1963, where he worked for Phillips and she went to work as a utility clerk for the city of Fritch. She later became the city bookkeeper, a position that she held for 20 years. She also served as interim city manager on two different occasions until the city could hire a manager. After retiring, she served on the Fritch City Council for one term.
Charleen was the true center of her family. She was always there to provide a steady hand, a listening heart and help in any time of need. She loved her family above all else and was an inspiration to them. She often said that if everyone would just take care of their family, there wouldn't be any problems in this world.
She also was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, in 2001; a daughter, Lillian Beverly Johnson of Midland in 1988; and a son-in-law, Ronnie Smith.
Survivors include two daughters, Fredda Smith of Fritch and Mayda King and husband Terry of Pampa; and five grandchildren, D'Awn Swartwood and husband Brian and their children, Cody, Kynlee, Cale and Kylee of Amarillo, Shaunda Patterson and husband Dick and their children, Shey and Trace of Fritch, Craig Smith and wife Monti and their children, Madelyn and Raedon of Lubbock, Greg King and wife Shannon and their children, Morgan and Ryan of Great Bend, Kan., and Chalan Galloway and husband Robert and their children, Dathan and Cori of Fritch.
The family suggests memorials be to the ASPCA or to a favorite charity.
