Roberson, Margaret Champion Mary Margaret Champion Roberson passed from this life to her heavenly one Thursday, January 3, 2013. She was the oldest of three daughters born to Charles Clark Champion and Alma Elizabeth Biggers. She was born August 20, 1923 in Austin, Texas where she graduated from Austin High School and received her Bachelor's degree from the University of Texas in Austin before moving to Dallas in 1948. Mary Margaret had a gift of leadership and enjoyed assuming that role in both church responsibilities and civic ones, but she was foremost a devoted mother, grandmother, friend and relative to her family. She is survived by two daughters, Anne Elizabeth Ward and Margaret Jo Duff and their spouses Ronnie Ward and William Duff. Her two grandchildren of whom she was extremely proud are Ronald Roberson Ward of Dallas and Rebecca Ward Lindsay and husband D. Michael Lindsay of Wenham, Massachusetts. Her three great granddaughters Elizabeth, Emily, and Caroline Lindsay affectionately knew her as "Sweetie" a name given to her by her grandfather as an infant. Her two sisters survive her, Juanita Champion Meier and Josie Ellen Champion of Austin to whom she remained close all her life. Next to family Mary Margaret was devoted to and gave much of her time in service to Tyler Street United Methodist Church in Dallas where she has remained a member since 1948. As a member of the Sanctuary Choir and soloist for the many Sunday School classes, she instilled a love of music in her daughters who accompanied her as they grew up. As a member of the Anniversary Class in Tyler Street for over 64 years she had her closest friendships there and served through the years in every role from social chairman to president and as teacher for the last ten years. In 1987 she was 75th Anniversary Chairman for her church and obtained a Texas Historical Marker. Her interests and leadership in civic responsibilities included being past president of the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs which included almost 400 clubs in the state, Dallas Council of Garden Clubs, Nationally Accredited Flower Show Judges of Dallas where she was a master judge, Dallas Preparatory Group of Flower Show Judges, Oak Cliff Woman's Club, Lecture Luncheon Club of Dallas, and the Oak Cliff Society of Fine Arts. A few of the community boards she enjoyed serving on included Task Force for Goals for Dallas, Regional Health Planning Council of North Texas Council of Governments, Dallas Garden Center, Dallas County Historical Commission, Metropolitan YWCA, and Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce. A commemorative tree is planted on the State Capital grounds to honor her beautification efforts. Mary Margaret was a woman of strength and dignity whose children stand and bless her. She was a lady of character who was greatly loved and will be sorely missed by her family and all who knew her. Her service will be Sunday, January 6 at Tyler Street United Methodist Church at 3:00 p.m. and burial will be Monday, January 7.
