GALLAGHER,, MEGAN BREEDEN In her sleep at home in Highland Park, on June 8, 2005, the Lord took Megan, age 20 years, to his side. Born April 13, 1985 in the City of Westminster, London, Megan moved to Dallas at age 5. At her death, Megan has just returned home at the conclusion of her sophomore year at Furman University in Greenville, SC. Megan loved sports and the close bonds that competition forges among teammates. She participated in as many as she could before settling on her primary loves: basketball and volleyball. At Highland Park High School, Megan and her teammates completed three successful varsity basketball campaigns, advancing to the state playoffs each year. Megan earned all-district first team honors each season; as a senior she was a district MVP, named to the all-region team and an alternate to the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-Stars. Outside of school, Megan participated on select teams in soccer and then exclusively basketball, playing in both AAU and Basketball Congress International sanctioned events. She and her Team Texas Express 17 - Longshots teammates were champions of the 2003 BCI national tournament. Her success on both school and select teams brought her closer to her dream to play basketball in college. This culminated in Megan's acceptance of a full scholarship to Furman University. In addition, Megan was a key contributor to Highland Park's rising volleyball program, earning all-district second team and elite team honors in her two varsity campaigns. She was classmate to a successful group of young women whose teams finished first in district in each year from grades six through twelve. She was also a stalwart in track and field where her talents in field events promoted her to varsity as a high school freshman. Megan became HPHS's second athlete to qualify for the regional championship meet each year of their high school career (four years in the shot put and two years in the discus). She set or extended her school records in the shot put on several occasions over three years. Megan's loved her music, in which she had developed a broad taste, loved to ski and snowboard and had numerous other interests. Baking was a special passion; early on, she collected recipes into her own books and considered being a pastry chef as her alternate career. Megan had a wonderful personality and was loved by her teammates, friends and fellow students. She was a delightful person with a beautiful and radiant smile. Her athletic prowess was only matched by the goodness of her spirit. In her freshman year at Furman, injuries sidelined Megan and she left basketball at the beginning of her sophomore year. Having declared communications her major, she loved Furman where she had made a great number of additional friends and was looking forward to her return to campus.
