Granberry, Mina Gene Surrounded by loved ones who never left her side, Mina Gene Wilbourn Granberry passed away peacefully on January 10, 2012. She was 85. Born in Wills Point, Texas, 50 miles east of Dallas, Mina Gene grew up as the only daughter of Quitman Wilbourn, a barber, and Vaudie Wilbourn, the town's telephone operator before dial service. Her older brothers, Ezell and John Wilbourn, preceded her in death. Her younger brother, Jimmie Wilbourn, was by her side during her final hours, as were her children and their families, including cousins, who told her how much they loved her and played sweet ballads from her favorite musicians. Mina Gene graduated from Wills Point High School during World War II, and in 1948, she married Henry Lee Granberry, a fellow East Texan then serving in the U.S. Navy. Mina Gene and Henry settled in Dallas, where Henry eventually became president of Texas Screen Process Supply. Mina Gene was a devoted wife and mother, so much so that her children reveled in her trademark Texas cuisine, such as her fabulous fried okra, homemade salsa and raisin cream pie. She was, in so many ways, the quintessential mom, who delivered fresh cookies to her children's classrooms, who tirelessly comforted her children and grandchildren when they were sick, whose annual Christmas celebration rivaled the Rose Parade. She believed deeply in prayer, and her loving heart touched the lives of many. Mina Gene was a devout Southern Baptist who attended Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and Colonial Baptist Church. Preceded in death by her parents, her brothers and her loving husband, Mina Gene is survived by her four children and their families: Michael Granberry and Nancy Churnin, who are writers for The Dallas Morning News, and their children, Ted, Sam, David and Josh; Suzanne and Sherm Updegraff of Denver, Colo., and their children, Stefanie and Sehler; Mark and Charla Granberry of Heath, Texas, and their children, Brandon and his wife, Stephanie, Jared and his wife, Jaimee, Mallory Henrichs and her husband, John; Larry and Jill Granberry of Wylie, Texas, and their children, Emma and Ross. She also is survived by three great-grandchildren, Payton and Payne Granberry and Jaxson Henrichs. The family will receive friends from 6 pm to 8 pm Friday night January 13, 2011, at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home with the service to follow at 12:00 noon on Saturday, January 14, 2011 at Sparkman-Hillcrest Northwest Chapel, 7405 W. Northwest Highway in Dallas. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 1500 Rosecrans Avenue, Suite 200, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266.
