*Obituary
A 67 year old Borger man was pronounced dead on arrival at North Plains Hospital about midnight last night, the apparent victim of a fire which broke out in his home, 216 E. Adams.
A.W. Giles, actually pronounced dead about 1:10 a.m. this morning, was discovered in the living room of his modest house when firemen arrived at the scene about 11:15 p.m.
He succumbed in spite of immediate oxygen treatment, officials said.
Firemen said the man had apparently fallen asleep on the couch while smoking. There was no one else in the apartment at the time of the blaze.
Fire Department officials stated that Giles had been asleep "quite a while" before realizing the couch was on fire. The left side of his head, face and arm had severe burns from being in direct contact with the blaze.
When ambulance attendants found Giles, he had risen to a slumped position on the couch unable to move away from the fire. He was trying to talk, but was incapable of speaking coherently.
Firemen removed the couch from the room. There was no damage to nearby apartments.
The apartment walls were blackened from the smoke and a wall clock above the couch had stopped running.
Giles had been a resident of Borger for the past 24 years.
Services are scheduled for Minton Memorial Chapel at 4 p.m. Wednesday, the Rev. Joe Dee Ray, pastor of First Baptist Church officiating.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. W.P. Mongold, Borger; a son, Coy Joe Giles, San Antonio; a brother James Giles, Morenci, Ariz.; one sister, Mrs. Bertie Ellison, Arizona and four grandchildren.
