Robert E. (Bob) Carl, civic activist and retired marketing executive, was called home by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 19, 2010. He was born September 1, 1927, in Independence, MO. to the late Elmer T. and Marian P. Carl, and brought up in nearby Kansas City, MO. He moved to Dallas following his graduation from the University of Kansas in 1950. In addition to a bachelor's degree in journalism from KU, Mr. Carl studied advertising design at the Kansas City Art Institute for two years. He later earned graduate certificates from both the New York Institute of Finance and Southern Methodist University. Mr. Carl was listed in Who's Who in America and similar biographical directories. He was co-founder and executive director of the Preston Center Association as well as a co-founder of The North Dallas Christian Coalition. He was also a director of the Park City Club for three years and a board member for two years of the Diamond Head HOA. In 1958, Mr. Carl was presented the Silver Anvil Award by the Public Relations Society of America for directing the nation's most outstanding civic campaign that was sponsored by the Greater Dallas Planning Council that year. During the same period, he served as public relations director of the U.S. Jaycees' international convention and of its Ten Outstanding Young Men in America awards banquet, which were sequentially held in Dallas. Mr. Carl began his business career with the Republic National Bank of Dallas, later becoming vice president of a prominent printing and publishing company. A consummate volunteer in local government affairs, Mr. Carl served as a director of communications for the Dallas County Republican Party and as chairman of the Greater Dallas Pachyderm Club. He also served as a local precinct chairman and election judge. In additon, he was a committee chairman in 1998 for the Dallas County GOP District Convention. He also served on the Dallas County Grand Jury. Before that, he was appointed by the Dallas City Council to serve two terms on the Dallas Cable Television Board. In 1997, he was chairman of the Save Our Streets (SOS) committee. During the continuation of his business career, Mr. Carl became co-founder and president of Jones-Carl, Inc., a public relations firm. He later established and was CEO of Marketing Management Systems. Both organizations provided marketing communications for some of Texas leading enterprises. In addition, he served as vice president of communications for the Modern America Corporation for seven years, including the Zale Corporation and the Pan American Exposition of the State Fair of Texas, and then as senior vice president of marketing services at the Vantage Companies for 13 years. He also served as director of the Dallas Junior Chamber of Commerce, and as president of the Sales and Marketing Executives of Dallas Association as well as the Big D Toastmasters Club. In addition, he served as senior vice president of Sales and Marketing Executives International. At one time, Mr. Carl was a member of the Dervish Club, the Dallas Advertising League, the Press Club of Dallas, and the International Platform Association. As a youth, he was an Eagle Scout and earned four Palm awards (41 merit badges). He was also a recipient of both the Chevalier and Legion of Honor degrees from the International Fraternal Order of DeMolay. After having served as Master Councilor of the youth organization's mother chapter in Kansas City, MO., he later became a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason as well as an endowed member of John L. DeGrazier Blue Lodge of Dallas and a member of Hella Shrine Temple. A devout Christian when he first came to Dallas, he became a member of Highland Park Methodist Church for 15 years. There he served on the Board of Stewards, chairman of the educational committee, and president of his Sunday School Class (TNT) and of the Methodist Mens Club. Mr. Carl is survived by his wife of nearly 43 years, Linda S. Carl, and their three children: Mrs. Melanie R. Nicklas, R. Brady Carl, and Miss Camber C. Carl. Also his daughter-in-law, Meniza Bannister Carl and his son-in-law, Thomas H. Nicklas, and seven grandchildren: Mary, Rachel, Peter, Josiah, Grace, Isaiah and Sarah Catherine Nicklas, all of the greater Dallas area. In addition, he leaves a sister, Miss Marilyn R. Carl of Kansas City, MO. Visitation will be Monday, June 21st from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be Tuesday, June 22nd at 2:00 p.m. at Park Cities Baptist Church at 3933 Northwest Parkway , where Mr. Carl was a member for over 25 years and of the Floyd's Faithful Fellowship. He also served on the church's 50th anniversary committee. A private committal service will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Honorary Pallbearers will be Brady Carl, Tom Nicklas, Jess McIver, Hank Goldsmith, Tom McBride, Marty Martin, Pete Eckert, and Harry Sutton.
