BARRAGAN, MARJORIE PARTLOW, age 83, passed away Thursday, May 29, 2003, at her home surrounded by her loving family after a courageous struggle with colon cancer. Marjie was born January 15, 1920 in Whitney, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her husband James C. Barragan, Sr. Marjie is survived by her sister Euleen Sanders of Ashville, Alabama, her sons James C. Barragan, Jr. and Michael A, Barragan, both of Dallas, her daughter Katherine Barragan Lyon of Euless, Texas, their spouses Nancy Barragan, Beverly Barragan and Randy Lyon, and grandchildren Culley Barragan, Beth Barragan, Katie Barragan. Jenny Lyon and Christopher Lyon. Marjie was raised in Ashville, Alabama and attended the University of Alabama, her much beloved alma mater. After college she rose high in the ranks at Retail Credit Bureau in Gadsden, Alabama, and it was through that position that she met her husband Jim. She and Jim moved to Dallas in the early 1950's and Marjie worked for a number of years as bookkeeper at the old University Club in downtown Dallas, which enabled her to meet and become friends with various big wigs and celebrities like H. L. Hunt, John Wayne, Ava Gardner and William Holden. She raised her kids (and many of their friends) at their home on Desco Drive. Marjie was very active at Christ the King Catholic Church and School, Glen Lakes Country Club, and was always there (and everywhere) for her children. After spending a number of years as a stay-at-home mom, Marjie went back to work in the 1970's as controller for The Rattan Shop on Preston Road and, after it was sold, she took a similar position with Elegant Casual Furniture in Richardson. Marjie loved her work and didn't retire until she was 78 years young. She especially enjoyed her final years because of the time she was able to spend with her grandchildren. She was a huge sports fan, and only in her last hours did she finally lose interest in watching every pitch of the Texas Rangers games. Her last months after learning of her terminal condition were fruitful and measured, and she died at peace with the Lord. Her family will receive friends Monday, 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., at the funeral home. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at Noon at Sparkman/Hillcrest Northwest Highway Chapel. Father Sean Martin officiating, with interment following immediately thereafter at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials or donations may be made to The Salesmanship Club Youth & Family Centers, Inc., 106 E. 10th Street, Dallas, TX 75203.
