KAUFMAN, Celia Celia Jane Caldwell Kaufman, age 94, died peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her family on December 24, 2014. Born on September 1, 1920 in Memphis, Tennessee, she grew up as a little sister of two protective brothers, Jerry and Felix Caldwell, whom she survived. As a child Celia grew up as an involved member of a vibrant Reform Jewish community in Memphis, Tennessee and later attended Washington University in St. Louis. While joining friends on a trip to New Orleans for a 1941 New Year's Eve celebration she met Carl Kaufman, who was serving in the army during WW II. While their lives didn't allow for an in depth courtship, one thing led to another and the two were married on January 24th 1943. Celia is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law, Carl Jr. and Dianna Kaufman, Irwin and Dawn Kaufman and Perry and Lynda Kaufman. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Carla, Carey, Seth, Aaron, Kahla, Elizabeth, Matthew, Alison and Scott. Her family joy has been extended to include 10 great grandchildren. Although a quiet personality, Celia enjoyed Mahjong with her friends and was a highly committed volunteer at Jewish Family Service for more than a decade. With that in mind, family was always her pride and joy. Donations in her memory can be made to Jewish Family Service.Services will be held Sunday Dec. 28 at Sparkman/ Hillcrest Funeral Home in the Northwest Highway Chapel at 10:00AM.
