Thomas served in the 4th Regiment Texas Mounted, Company A, from August 27, 1861 to June 1865. He fought in the only two Civil War battles in New Mexico, The Battle of Val Verde, in which his horse was killed, and the battle of Glorieta Pass. The defeated Calvary walked back to Caldwell Co., where they were met by a rescue effort consisting of family members that came to save their children, husbands and fathers.
