Moody, Harriet Elstow Harriet E. Moody born January 4, 1923, in Galveston, Texas died June 20, 2008 in Mesquite, Texas. Harriet was an only child. Her parents, John Moody and Sophy Elstow Moody preceded her in death. She grew up in Galveston with gentle, loving, caring parents instilling in her Godly virtues and high ideals. Early in life she accepted Jesus as her personal Savior. First Baptist Church of Galveston nurtured her spiritually. Even though Harriet had no blood siblings, she embraced her University of Mary Hardin Baylor "sisters". Her class of 1940-1944 were the World War II years. Many class mates left U.M.H.B. to marry and follow their service men husbands, and others left College to man the jobs in the market place that had been left vacant because of the war. Consequently the graduating class was small and very close. Today those sisters of U.M.H.B. and the "sisters" of Wilshire Baptist Church are her family who loved her and celebrate her beautiful life. Marie Peck and husband Gerald, Mary Jo Edwards and husband Gordon are U.M.H.B. "sisters" and their families who have loved her as family. In the 1944 Bluebonnet, the U.M.H.B. annual, the caption under Harriet's picture gives a fitting tribute to our Harriet Elstow Moody: "In her quiet, capable way, Harriet Moody has become a symbol on the campus for those things which are fine and good. Her attitude of cooperation and willingness has made her worthy of many places of honor and responsibility in which she has served. In the capacities of B.S.U. council member, Vice President of her Senior Class, President of Alpha Chi, co-editor of the Bluebonnet, National Who's Who III and IV, and many others she has ever proved to ring true!" She was a volunteer at Baylor University Medical Center, Wilshire Baptist Church Library and "English as a Second Language" program. Harriet worked at the University of Texas at Dallas, from 1962 thru 1986 as an Executive Assistant. Funeral services are at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2008 in Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tim Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
