HEMPHILL, ROSS HUGON Ross Hugon Hemphill, 87, a well loved and highly respected Dallas attorney, passed away July 28th, 2007 in Dallas, Texas. He was born May 9th, 1920 in Gainesville, Texas to Charles Frank Hemphill and Mable Leota Hugon. He grew up in Cross Plains, finishing High School in 1937. He enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin and obtained his Law degree at age 21 as a member of the "famous class of 1942". He passed the Texas State Bar in October, 1941. In 1996 he received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Lincoln Memorial University of Harrogate, Tennessee, and was a Trustee of this university for 10 years. He spent 4 1/2 years in the army enlisting as a Private 10 days after Pearl Harbor. He rose to Captain of Infantry, 102nd Ozark Division, landing at Cherbourg, France after D-Day and fighting in the Ruhr, Roer River and Rhineland campaigns, and in the first units to meet the Russians at the Elb River at Magdeburg, 70 miles from Berlin. He was a decorated combat officer with several campaign ribbons, including The Bronze Star Medal. He was overseas for 18 months, and participated in several Army court martial's both as a prosecutor and defense. He married Annie Lou Seymour in Dallas, in October, 1942. They were married for 51 years, until her death in September, 1993. Ross and Annie Lou had two children: Dr. Ross Seymour Hemphill of Austin, and Barbara Anne Gojer of Southlake. He married Lillian Johnson in March, 1994. He worked in the title and lease departments of Sun Oil in Dallas, and the Hunt Oil Company as a Landman-Lawyer. He moved to Snyder, Texas in 1950 and began a law practice during the Snyder oil boom, participating in many oil and gas title suits. He was on the Snyder School Board for 3 years. He moved back to Dallas in 1959 and joined Arch McCullough, George Ray, and Robert Trotti in law practice. He became Vice President, Director and General Counsel of Aminex Corporation which owns minerals at Archer City, Texas. He established scholarships at the University of Texas Law School, and U.T. Southwestern Medical School where his son and son-in-law received medical degrees. He served on the administrative board and as a Trustee of Highland Park United Methodist Church and was a member of the choir. In 1994 he joined Park Cities Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon. He was preceded in death by his brothers Charles Frank Hemphill, Jr. an FBI agent, and Henry Hemphill, an architect. He is survived by his wife, Lillian Hemphill, his three sisters, Emmarie Reeves of Dallas, Ann Perryman of Richardson, and Nancy Helen Bauer of Irving, his children, Ross and Ann Hemphill, of Austin, Barbara and Bernie Gojer of Southlake, his grandchildren, Elizabeth and Jim Briggs, Katherine Hemphill, Benjamin Gojer, Sarah Gojer. Lillian's children Susan and Bryan Keyes and their children, Matt and Jen Keyes and Lillie and Matt Merfeld, and great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Park Cities Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 31st, followed by a graveside service at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
