Pioneer Citizen and Retired Rural Mail Carrier Victim of Yesterday

J. N. Bailey, 79, long-time resident of Rockdale and retired rural route carrier, died at his home here Wednesday at noon following a short illness of pneumonia. He had been in declining health for some time.
Funeral services are to be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Phillips & Luckey funeral home. The body will be taken from the Bailey residence to the funeral home Friday morning and services will be conducted in the afternoon by the Rev. P. T. Ramsey, pastor of the Methodist Church of Rockdale, assisted by the Rev. L. E. Strickland, Baptist pastor. Mr. Bailey was a member of the Methodist church. Burial will follow in the I. O. O. F. cemetery.
Carrier 23 Years
Mr. Bailey was well and favorably known in Rockdale and throughout this section of the county. For twenty-five years he served as rural carrier, retiring in August 19(?). He carried the old route 3 out of Rockdale, and retired at the time that route was consolidated with No. 4.
Joseph Newel Bailey was born June 17, 1859, in Anderson county, South Carolina. At about the age of 12 he moved to Barto county, Georgia with his parents, and at the age of 35 came to Texas. He had lived in Milam county since that time.
He was married to Lou Elam on October 14, 1897, and to this union were born seven children, all of whom survive him except one daughter, Lila Marie, who precede him in death by 19 years. Another daughter by a previous marriage--Mrs. R. M. (Bessie) Denney--also preceded him in death a year ago at (?), Ga.
Those who survive are his wife and the following children: Mrs. Roy Richards, Walter Alfred and Emerson Bailey, all of Rockdale; Mrs. M. L. Mixon, Longview; Mrs. B. L. Glover, Seminole; and the following grandchildren; Chester Hale, Billie Marie and Helen Louise Mixon, Helen Jane Bailey, of Rockdale; Doris Ann Bailey of Independence; Mrs. Floy Fuqura, Hoyt, Denny, Lois, Retha; and on grandchild of Georgia.
The following brothers and sisters also survive; W. H. Bailey, of Folsom, Ga., C. W. Bailey, Adairsville, Ga.; Mrs. Alice Garrett, Plainvies Ga.; Mrs. Julia Stone, Calhoun, Ga.; and a large number of nieces and nephews.

ROCKDALE, Jan. 7. - J. N. Bailey, 79, native od South Carolina, died at his home here late Wednesday.
Funeral services were held Friday with the Rev. P. T. Ramsey of the Methodist church officiating. Burial was in the I. O. O. F. cemetery. He came to Milam county from Georgia 45 years ago and had lived in Rockdale for the past 40 years. He was for 25 years a rural mail carrier, retiring in 1929. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Lou Elam Bailey; three daughters, Mrs. Roy Richards of Rockdale, Mrs. M. L. Mixon of Longview, Mrs. B. L. Gloves of Seminole; three sons, Walter, Alfred and Emerson Bailey of Rockdale; two brothers, W. H. and C. W. Bailey of Georgia; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Garrett and Mrs. Julia Stone of Georgia.
