83-YEAR-OLD ROCKDALE CITIZEN DIES AT HOME AFTER AN ILLNESS OF TWO MONTHS
--------------------------
Louis Henry Porter, 83, died at his home in Rockdale Thursday, March 10, after an illness of two months. His wife and three children were at his bedside.
Funeral services were held at the home here at 3 p. m. Friday, conducted by the Rev. H. E. Crone, pastor of the First Christian church. Burial was made in the I. O. O. F. cemetery.
Mr. Porter was born near Clarksville, Tennessee, at Porter's Landing on the Cumberland River, December 24, 1854. He was the eldest child of Louisa Smith Porter and Henry Persins Porter. He spent his early life in Tennessee, came to Texas in 1877 and settled in Rockdale where he lived continuously until his death. He was first engaged in the furniture business, then in the hardware business, and afterwards in the raising of live stock and in farming.
On November 12, 1885, he married Mary Hamblen. Four children were born of this union: Henry, Irma, Louis, and Catherine. Catherine passed away in 1913 at the age of nineteen and Louis died in 1923 at the age of thirty-three. On November 8, 1897, his wife, Mary, passed away.
He married Alice Hamblen, sister of Mary, on May 2, 1899. One child was born, Mary Alice.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Hamblen Porter; three children, Henry C. Porter of Austin and Irma H. and Mary Alice of this city; one grandchild, Louis Henry Porter the second, of Austin; and one sister, Mrs. Irma Porter Teague of Lady Lake, Florida.
Mr. Porter was a christian gentleman of a refined and sensitive nature and with a high appreciation of the finer things of life. He was a man of unusual ability and talents. He stood openly on the side of what he believed to be the right and his influence for the good extended further than he ever realized. He was a charitable man. But he was above all, an ideal husband and father.
In youth he joined the Christian Church, of which he was an active and loyal member of various fraternal orders and he was a Son of the American Revolution.
Active pall bearers were Ed Simms, S. C. Christian, Howard Richards, George Perry, Preston Perry, Jr., Jim Laning, B. Ashby and C. R. Isaacs.
