James Walter "Jake" Jernigan, 81, passed from this life on Monday, June 22, 2009, in Bryan, Texas. Visitation was held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, at Hillier Funeral Home, located at 2301 E. 29th St. in Bryan. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at Hillier Funeral Home. Lemuel Phillips will officiate. Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at City of Lubbock Cemetery.

Jake was born on June 25, 1927, to Claud and Opal (Reed) Jernigan in Vernon, Texas, and was the eldest of four children. Jake was raised in a loving family devoted to Christ and his life reflected that. After graduating from Seagraves High School, Jake enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Upon his discharge, he attended Oklahoma University and Sul Ross College, where he met and married Jerrie Casey on August 26, 1948.

From an early age, Jake was active in the Church of Christ, especially as a song leader. He served as a deacon in Cortez, Colo., and as an elder at the A&M Church of Christ in College Station.

Jake's life was the oil field. Wherever Jake and Jerrie lived, they were a vital part of establishing the church and helping missionaries. He drilled wells in Texas, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Columbia, Ecuador, Trinidad, Egypt, and Tunisia. In 1981, Jake and Jerrie moved to College Station, but he continued to drill oil and gas wells in the age. In 1991, he went to Russia to develop an oil field on Sakhalin Island until 1994.

Jake was preceded in death by his parents, Claud and Opal Jernigan, and daughter, Pamela Jean Jernigan.

Survivors include his devoted wife of more than 60 years, Jerrie Jernigan; daughter and son-in-law, Claudia and Stewart Gillespie of Lubbock; granddaughter, Jennifer Gillespie of Dallas; three younger sisters and brothers-in-law, Melba and Billy Burr of Amarillo, Texas, Claudine and Darrel Nimmo of La Junta, Colo., and Dorthy and Jerry Houchin of Huntsville, Texas; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and brethren in Christ.
