Services held for Judge H. M. Hood

Services for Judge H. M. Hood, 80, who helped form the Hutchinson County Court of Domestic Relations and served as its judge two terms, were held March 23 in First United Methodist Church in Borger, Texas.

The Rev. Lymon Paul Wood, pastor, officiated. Burial was in Westlawn Memorial Cemetery by Alexander-Simpson Funeral Home.

Judge Hood, practicing law until his retirement in 1975, died Monday in Veterans Administration Hospital in Amarillo.

Born in Mississippi, he came to Borger in 1926 during the oil boom. He previously taught school in Kansas.

He was born near Lodi, in Montgomery County. He graduated from the high school in Kilmichael. He then attended and graduated from University of Mississippi with a Law degree. He was a veteran of World War I. He also played football both in high school and college.

Judge Hood served as justice of the peace and later as county judge in Hutchinson County in 1929-30. He was licensed to practice law before the Supreme Court of the United States and became domestic relations judge in 1955.

Judge Hood heard about 300 divorces a year while on the bench, but fewer than 49 percent of the cases filed ultimately ended in divorce.

The judge once explained, "Courts make mistakes granting divorces where there are not proper grounds."

He said the court primarily was a divorce court, "but actually it's a place where I try to get people to live together."

Judge Hood married Reba Quimby in 1939 at Perryton. He was a charter member of the First United Methodist Church of Borger and a veteran of World War I.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Stephen of Borger a daughter, Mrs. Connie Rattan of Cisco; four brothers, Dick of Memphis, Tenn., Noel of Jackson, Miss., Charley of Florence, Miss., and Taylor of Beaumont; six sisters, Mrs. Zona Grimes of Flossmoor, Ill., Mrs. Belle Riddell of Canton, Miss., Mrs. Sue Keith of Kilmichael, Miss., Mrs. Beatrice Meredith of Santee, Calif., Mrs. Polly Pierce of Memphis, Tenn., and Mrs. Claudia Boggan of Ackerman, Miss.; and 12 grandchildren.
