James William "Dutch" Luman, 89, of 431 Whittenburg, an area resident for 46 years died today.

Services are pending with Minton Mortuary.

Mr. Luman was born Sept. 14, 1888 in Young County. Known to many as a cattle rancher and wolf hunter, he had been a Texas Ranger for 38 years and a field inspector for Southwest Cattle Association. During this time he served a five-state area and was referred to as the Sherlock Holmes of the Old West in an historical publication.

Survivors include his wife, Ola Faye; one daughter, Mrs. Edith Schmidt of Red Bluff, Calif.; four sons, Bill of Red Bluff, Calif., Gordon Dell and Calvin Jeff both of Fritch, and J.W. of Denton; three sisters, Mrs. Lela Kennedy of Post, Mrs. Mattie McNeill of Alpine, and Mrs. Irene Hart of Hemet, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
