Funeral services for Bob Veretto, 70, of Levelland will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, with Rev. Msgr. Tim Schwertner, Rotan and Rev. Reynaldo Reyes, of Levelland officiating. Burial will be in City of Levelland Cemetery under direction of George Price Funeral Home in Levelland. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Monday, March 5, 2007, in George Price Funeral Home. He died at 12:44 a.m. Sunday, March 4, 2007, at University Medical Center in Lubbock.

Born on June 3, 1936, in Levelland, to Frank and Jewel Murphy Veretto, he was a lifelong resident of the South Plains. He graduated from Lubbock Cooper High School in 1954 and from Texas Tech in 1960 with a degree in accounting and finance. In 1982, he received his banking degree from Southwestern Graduate School of Banking.

He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity at Texas Tech and the recipient of the American Legion Award in 1954. He was a veteran of the USMC, having served 6 months active duty and five years in the USMC Reserves, receiving and honorable discharge in 1963. He began farming in Bovina and moved to Levelland in March of 1960. He was voted the conservation Farmer of the Year in 1965.

In September of 1973, he joined the Trust Department of First National Bank. He served as Trust Officer, Loan Officer and then Vice President. Upon graduation from SWGSB he was promoted to Executive Vice President . He was owner of Veretto Fertilizer and he also continued to farm sever al hundred acres.

He served as a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, and the Knight of Columbus where he served as an officer. He was a member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He served as a member and officer of St. Michael's Parish Council, and St. Michael's Finance Committee and he served for seventeen years on the Catholic Diocesan Finance Board. He also served as a member of Marriage Sponsorship Group at St. Michael's.

He was one of the initial planners of Building the St. Michael's smokehouse and the Annual Sausage Festival, where he thoroughly enjoyed making German sausage with Albert Kahlich and Italian sausage, using the Veretto secret family recipe. He served as a director of the American Banking Association, and president, director, and officer of the BAI, and officer, director and president of SPBA for seventeen years, and was owner, director and officer of the Sundown State Bank. He was also a member of the SPC Texan Club , and was an active member of the Levelland Little Dribblers Program and other youth programs over the years.

He loved to hunt, fish, bowl, travel, watch movies, go to family gatherings, and help others. He always looked forward to doing these many things with his friends, however, his beloved wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were his priority.

In 1984, he suffered a stroke and shortly thereafter, he retired, but he continued to stay active in financial organizations, and to help his son on the farm and their other ventures. He also continued to serve on the board of the SPBA and to support the Lobos and Loboettes as well as the Red Raiders and the Lady Raiders as well as the SPC basketball teams. He continued to help others and to do Honey Dos.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Carylon Veretto of Levelland; a son, Bobby Veretto and wife Debbie of Level and; three daughters, Sherry Phelps and husband Barry of Levelland, Becky Wilson and husband, Roy Don of Haskell, and Brenda Bigham of Levelland; one brother, Don Veretto & wife Norma of Lubbock & one sister, Gwen Jackson & husband Raymon of Levelland; nine grandchildren, Carrie and Trey Phelps, Kelli Boggs and fiance Eric Rincones, Stefanie Barnett, Leslie Wharry and husband Tony, and Lee Taylor Wilson, Heather Bigham, Joshua Veretto and wife Kandis and Chase Veretto; five great- grandchildren, Abbie and Ethan Boggs, Addison Yarbrough, Jayci Veretto and Gage Bigham; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, whom he dearly loved.

Many many dear friends and acquaintances will never know how much he loved and appreciated them.
