Ophie Cooper Shafer, 95, of Lubbock and formerly of Slaton passed from this life surrounded by her family Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006. She was born Aug. 11, 1911 in DeKlab, Texas. She moved to the Wilson/Slaton area in 1930 from Crowell. She attended school in Wilson. Ophie married Claude Cooper in 1935 and he preceded her in death in 1955. She later married Beck Shafer in 1983 and he preceded her in death in 2002.
Ophie had farmed, was a beautician and later a LVN at Methodist Hospital. She helped establish Slaton's Meals on Wheels, cooking many meals in her home. She was a member of the Slaton Eastern Star and long time member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her son, Billy and wife, Pat, Cooper and daughter, Patti and husband, Donald, Bednarz all of Lubbock; sister, Mary Frances Lafferty of Sugarland; six grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006 in Englunds Chapel, with Rev. Kenneth Winchester officiating. Interment will be in Englewood Cemetery and under the direction of Englunds Funeral Service.
