GALVESTON — Norma (Mimi) Schaper, 92, of Galveston, passed away Tuesday, December 7, 2010, at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital in Houston. She was born September 19, 1918, in Galveston, and survived the 1918 influenza pandemic, the depression, and waiting for the love of her life to return from World War II. "My life began" when she married that love, August Charles (A.C.) Schaper, and shared life at the Schaper dairy. They were married for 63 years and had three children.

Norma was a talented musician. She appeared in many musical productions and was an accomplished pianist. She sang in the choir at First Lutheran Church for 40+ years and was a soloist for countless weddings. She loved music and it was always a major part of her life. Norma loved God and the church, and the family at First Lutheran was a central part of her life. She was honored as "Pillar of the Church" in 2003.

Many can attest that Norma was a fabulous cook, as there were many backyard cookouts and large family dinners. She loved her garden, especially the sweet peas, pansies, and the lemon tree. She was very artistic and loved to embroidery and was a beautiful seamstress. Norma so loved and avidly followed the Astros and the Dallas Cowboys. She lived in Sugar Land with her daughter, Jill, for her last 5 years and was a joy to everyone around her. Norma was essentially an extremely kind person and was loving to everyone, family or stranger.

Norma was preceded in death by her husband, A.C. (age 92); sister, Dorothy Faulkner; and brothers, Norman Tobleman, Jr. and William Tobleman.

She is survived by her daughter, Diann; son, A.C. (Skippy) Jr. and wife, Denise; and daughter, Jill Yancey and husband, Rick; grandchildren: Lori Diaz and fiancé, Fred Utley; Christopher Yancey and wife, Kelly; great grandchildren: Hanna and Kimi Diaz; sisters, Florence Giusti, Betty Albright, and Virginia Wood; sisters-in-law: Mable Schulze, AnnaBelle Swygert, Catherine Siefkes, Jane Schaper, Waunita Schaper, and Charlotte Tobleman; brothers-in-law, Ray Schaper and Rusty Schaper; and godchildren, Karen Meyers and Kathy Svoboda.

Norma's family will receive visitors from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., Thursday, December 9th, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 10th, at First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Doug Guthier officiating. Burial will follow the service at Grace Memorial Park in Hitchcock.

Pallbearers will be Chris Yancey, Rusty Schaper, Pat Dye, Ronnie Tobleman, Jimmy Fundling, and Frank Macaluso. Honorary pallbearers are Nina Ceccacci, Angie Keller, Joe and Helga Garcia, George Black, D. Gale Rogers, Mary and Jimmy Westmoreland, Bubba and Martha Wedemeyer, and Joan Shaw.

The family would like to thank Marilyn Chuvac for the loving care she gave to Norma.

SUGAR LAND — August Charles ["A.C."] Schaper, 92, died June 12, 2007, at Methodist Hospital in Sugar Land, Texas. Born February 15, 1915, on Galveston Island to Elizabeth and A.H. "Boop" Schaper; the oldest son of 13 children. A.C. was a dairyman, milking his first cow at age 7 and continued for 57 years. He was a faithful member of First Lutheran Church in Galveston and served on the Vestry, Choir member, many committees and was a "pillar" of the church. He was a Sergeant in the US Army in WW II and served in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska and Patton's 3rd Army crossing the Rhine in Germany.

A.C. loved his Houston Astros, Dallas Cowboys, Gunsmoke and Festus, ice cold milk and Bud Light, Manhattan Rummy, Cribbage, and in spite of his children's protest, he continued to watch Lawrence Welk at the loudest setting of the television. He loved to cook everything from apple cake to brisket. He hand built his home on the island and helped build the dairy after the war. We should not forget the watermelon and cantaloupe fields and fireworks stands that many siblings contributed to, the block long vegetable garden, and his 30 years service as precinct 224 judge.

Preceding him in death are his brothers Harold, Victor, Louis, Robbie and Buck and Sisters Helen Walker and Ethel Mae Schaper. His brother-in-laws, Henry Schulze, Paul Siefkes, Wallace Albright, Kenneth Giusti, Milton Walker and Ed Woods, and sister-in-laws Dorothy Faulkner, Olga Schaper, Connie Tobleman, Jane Schaper, Ellie Schaper and Lillian Schaper.

He is survived by his loving wife Norma of 63 years; his daughter Diann Schaper and son A.C. Schaper, Jr. (Denise) both of Galveston and daughter Jill Schaper Yancey (Rick) of Sugar Land; his grandchildren Lori Diaz and Chris Yancey, and his great-grandchildren Hannah and Kimi Diaz. He is also survived by brothers Ray and Leroy (Janie); and sisters Mabel Schulze, Annabelle Swygart (Tom) and Katherine Siefkes. His brother-in-laws are William Tobleman, N. C. Tobleman (Charlotte), David Faulkner and sister-in-laws Betty Albright, Florence Giusti, and Virginia Wood, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. His Godchildren are Wayne Schaper, Janice Schaper, Karen Myers and Kathy Svoboda.

Pallbearers are Chris Yancey, Ronnie Schaper, Ronnie Tobleman, Frank Macaluso, Pat Dye and Dolph Tillotson. Honorary Pallbearers are George Black, Mr. and Mrs. Mario Ceccacci, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Fundling, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Keller, Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Westmorland, the Rev. Vernon Rabel, The Rev. David Hoh, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Folzman, Mr. and Mrs. John Sullivan, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Sullivan, Mr. and Mrs. Bubba Wedemeyer, Stephen Pena, Mr. and Mrs. Bubba Cleary, and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Garcia.

The family would also like to thank Dr. Angelia Shepherd @ UTMB Hospitals for her many years of service and Doctors Patel and Shah of Methodist Hospital in Sugar Land and the outstanding and passionate Nursing Staff of the Methodist Intensive Care Unit and his caregivers, Sonya, Lillian and Marylyn.

Visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, June 14, 2007, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home in Galveston. Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 15, 2007, at First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Douglas Guthier presiding. Burial will follow the service at Grace Memorial Park in Hitchcock.
