Newman, Sylvan Roy Sylvan Roy Newman passed away peacefully on October 14, 2011 with his family gathered around him. He was 85. Known to his friends and patients as "Doc," he was born in Dallas, but raised in Olney, Texas. He attended Texas A&M University at the age of 15. He subsequently entered dental surgery training at Baylor College of Dentistry, and finished his Oral Surgery Residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital before being assigned to the Naval Submarine Base in San Diego at age 21, where he served in the Naval Medical Service Corp during both World War II and the Korean Conflict. At the end of the war he returned to his home of Dallas, where he practiced general dentistry in Mesquite for over fifty years, touching countless lives. He was a scratch golfer, to the vexation of all his friends. He raced sailboats all over the country and was conferred the Distinguished Service Award from the International Lightning Class Association. He was an original member of Rush Creek Yacht Club and a life member of the Corinthian Yacht Club in Dallas. His complex and artistic woodworking is legendary. He is survived by Barbara, his wife of 53 years; his children: Craig and Geri Newman of New York City; Donnis Newman of Jupiter, Florida; Deanna Newman, Clarke Newman, Keith and Kate Newman of Dallas; Tim and Dayna of Rockwall and his grandchildren Alexandra, Brittany, Victoria, Ian, Mollie, Hunter, Joshua and Jesse. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the cancer charity of your choice. His life will be celebrated at Sparkman Hillcrest Northwest Hwy. Chapel at 2 pm Sunday, October 16, 2011.
