Zelma F. Root, Borger, died Sunday, Spt. 10, 1995 in Ware Memorial Care Center in Amarillo.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, Borger, with the Rev. David Jones, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery by Minton-Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.

A native of Jonesboro, La., she had been a longtime Borger resident. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Root graduated from Louisiana Tech University in the 1920s, with a bachelor of arts and a bachelor of science degrees. She was a teacher in Louisiana and Arkansas before moving to Borger in 1942. She began a teaching career with Borger Independent School District where she was a teacher for 30 years. After retiring in 1971 from Borger ISD, she taught at Frank Phillips College until 1976.

She was active in American Cancer Society, United Methodist Church, Professional Business Women's Organization, was a volunter at Golden Plains Community Hospital, was a member the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and Music Club.

She married Leon Root in June 1941. He preceded her in death in 1961.

She was also preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Bette Brown in 1994; and twin sister, Velma Gillespie in 1994.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Root Nelson and Leona Root Bellamy, both of Bartlesville; 7 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 2 nephews.

Casketbearers will be Don Braden, Robert Hinds, Sam Patrick, John Marrs, Dr. Hamp Gillespie, and Dr. Mike Gillespie.

Memorials may be made to Velma Freeman Gillespie and Zelma Freeman Root Foundation, c/o Don Braden and Larry Coffman, Box 570, Borger, 79008.
