Fred G. Beyea
April 12, 1870-Dec 12, 1962

Obituary:
Shorty Beyea came to Follett, Tx. in about 1930. He was born in Elkhart, IN. The 1900 census shows that he lived in Colcord, Indiana with his parents Charles and Mary Beyea. The 1920 census shows that he lived in Laverne, Ok. with his sister Bertha and her husband Michael Killough. The 1930 census shows he was living in Follett where he lived with and worked for Ira and Georgia Brown as a farmhand. He later worked for William R. and Cora Alice Brown. Sometime during the late 1930's, he moved to town where he lived in a one room house located on main street and owned by Ted and Nellon Roach. His correct age will probably never be known because several of the census have conflicting dates of birth. His death certificate shows he was born in 1870.
Shorty was Follett's "character" for several years. He attended about every event that was held, including sporting events, funerals, weddings, car wrecks, fires and etc. Any event, Shorty was in the picture gathering information which he would share with others.
He worked for his meals at Rip & Pauline Adam's Royale Inn Cafe. Shorty played dominoes and pool at Keith Cross's Pool Hall, attended movies at the movie theatre and spent a good amount of time in the barber shop with his friend Earl Byars as Earl cut hair.
Someone in the community always made sure he had a Christmas and someone always made sure he made it to the big game.
Shorty wore Big Smith overalls which had to be altered to accomadate his 24 inch inseam. He also wore a grey or blue work shirt plus black boots and a black hat. He smoked a pipe or cigarettes placed in a black plactic holder.
Shorty was a veteran of the Spanish-American war.
Shorty was baptized in the Methodist Church on November 28,1954 and was a faithful member of the Methodist Men's organization.
