J. D. DOBBINS BURIED AT WALKERS CREEK
John D. Dobbins, 66, former Cameron merchant and widely known citizen of Milam county, died at his home in Cameron on Sunday March 26, 1939, at 3:15 p. m. He had been in declining health for several years.
Mr. Dobbins at one time was one of the leading merchants of Milam county. He was among the first of the large retail grocers to introduce price giving and advertising and built up a large trade.
Mr. Dobbins was a native of Milam county, having been born in the old Dobbins home near Cameron on Feb. 10, 1873, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Starret Dobbins and except for a few months when he lived in New Mexico he had been a resident of Cameron.
Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock with Rev. B. B. Blaylock of Heidenheimer, former pastor of the Cameron church, assisted by Rev. A. J. McCary, pastor of the First Methodist church in Cameron.
Mr. Dobbins is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs. S. M. Burns of Austin; three grand sons, John S. Burns, David Burns and Tom Burns of Austin; one sister, Mrs. J. L. Chamberlain of Walkers Creek. The body was taken to the old home community an intered in the Walkers Creek cemetery.
Active pall bearers were Bob Bailey, Otto Meyer, Manuel Werner, Starrett Hickman, Dan Gunn, Geo. McGehee, Leo, Werner and Austin Wokaty, all of whom are former employees of the deceased.
Honorary pall bearers, all of whom are old time friends of Mr. Dobbins were as follows: W. T. Whatley, Sr., Sealey Lampkin, Dr. G. B. Taylor, Henry Hefley, Oxsheer Smith, Rush Thomas, Robert McLane, A. R. O'Neal, Shep McLerran, C. H. Ruby, Gene Smith, Fritz Fahrendorf, Lester Slaughter, L. F. Gohmert, L. L. Blaylock, Dave Link, L. C. Boyd, Will Vaughn, Roy Hightower, S. E. Kennon, Jim Shuffield, Geo. Graves and J. L. Barmore.
