Wife of Richard Alan Edwards
Jane Anne Edwards was born on March 23, 1942, in Fort Worth. At three weeks of age, her loving parents, Leo and Wilma Baggett of Lubbock, adopted her. Eighteen months later, a son, Don, was born to Leo and Wilma. Jane grew up in Lubbock, attending Dupree Elementary School and graduating from Monterey High School in 1960. She enrolled at Texas Tech that same year to follow her dream of becoming a teacher. During the summer before her sophomore year, Jane met her future husband, Richard Edwards. They married on Aug. 24, 1962, in Lubbock. They continued their education at Texas Tech. When Richard graduated in 1963, they relocated to Austin, where he enrolled in the University of Texas School of Law. Jane completed work on her bachelor's degree in education at the University of Texas. In 1967, Jane gave birth to their daughter, Melissa. They moved to San Angelo, where Jane devoted herself to raising Melissa, providing her with love and modeling compassion for all God's created beings. Though quite busy, Jane found time to volunteer with civic and social organizations and to advocate for persons afflicted with cystic fibrosis. In 1975, Jane and family moved to Wilmore, Ky. It was there that Jane began to fulfill her dream of teaching school. She especially enjoyed teaching eighth grade American history classes. She became a favorite among many students, especially those who struggled to learn and to fit in with their classmates. While living in Kentucky, Jane earned a master's degree in education at Georgetown College. Jane and her family moved to Tulsa, Okla., and then on to San Diego, Calif., where she became study skills director at Point Loma Nazarene College. In 1989, the family returned to their roots and settled in Slaton. There, Jane was active in First United Methodist Church, Koinonia Circle of United Methodist Women, Slaton Art Appreciation Club, Slaton Garden Club, Daughters of the Pioneer Study Club and Women's Chamber of Commerce. Jane passed from this life in Lubbock on March 15, 2012, at the age of 69 years. Surviving her are her husband, Richard of Slaton; daughter, Melissa Rice and husband Don of Ransom Canyon; grandchildren, Zachary and Hannah Rice; her mother, Wilma Baggett of Lubbock; a cousin, Nancy Alls and husband Richard of Lubbock; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. Her father, Leo Baggett, and brother, Don Baggett, predeceased her. Funeral services will be held at First United Methodist Church in Slaton on Saturday, March 17, 2012, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Jo Gay presiding. Interment will be in Englewood Cemetery in Slaton with services directed by Englunds Funeral Home.
