ROTAN -- David Holloway "Dave" Posey, 97, died Sunday, October 29, 2006 at Fisher County Hospital.
Services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at the Church of Christ in Rotan with Wes Eastman and Jason Alton officiating. Burial will be in Belvieu Cemetery under the direction of Weathersbee - Ray Funeral Home.
Born October 29, 1909 near Sterling City, TX Dave was a son to the late R.A. "Bob" and Elmara (Holloway) Posey. They soon moved to Oakville and then to the Wright Community. A popular athletic young man Dave excelled at tennis and baseball. He claimed a brilliant array of friends including the well-known Lee Raspberry, the famous Lawrence Sparks, the world-renowned Norville Kennedy, the noteworthy Ernest Counts, the esteemed Roy Edwards, the dynamic Speck Taylor, the honorable Ted McArthur, the brilliant Clarence Counts and the one and only Clifton Rogers.
Eventually Dave transferred to high school in Rotan where he played football, the same year H. Govan arrived in town as the water boy. While attending Draughans Business College he formed a close friendship with Lindly McFarland. One movie the two attended was "Ben Hur." After a stint in Abilene he decided the country life was for him so he headed home to Wright Community.
During his early manhood a new family, the Seatons, moved into town and they had some attractive daughters. When this family threw a big party for the neighbors Dave and his friend Clarence decided to go check out the "new girls." Always chivalrous toward ladies in distress Dave thought to himself, "I'll go cut in on them and give that girl (Willmath) a breather and save her from a boring time." Being grateful, as well she should have been, Willmath later invited him over for a visit, so he managed to fit her into his busy schedule. Later on April 21, 1933 Dave and Willmath (Seaton) dressed in their wedding attire and drove to Roby where they received their license to marry and headed straight for the preachers house in Rotan to get married. They settled into their new home in the Wright Community and had their first child, Richard. Oh what a joy he was! When Richard was only six weeks old this young family decided to seek fame and fortune out west in Oregon. After some time they became home-sick and realized how wonderful Texas was, arriving just in time for the birth of their second son Terry later to be known as Ted. Two years later a daughter Lanny arrived. After Lanny came the last daughter four years later, Bobbie. World War II was on and Dave was moving cattle. He ranched and owned a farm for eighty years. An early friend of Willmath's, Mr. Jim, became partners with Dave in the cattle business and P and O Lumber Company. At the end of the war Dave and Willmath began building their home in Rotan. Dave and Willmath worked hard, but they still had time to love and play not only with their four children but a score of other friends as well in particular Lawrence and Jane Sparks.
Dave enjoyed his community and civic services. He was president of the Lions Club, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, he helped organize Little League Baseball, served as a County Judge and was a homeroom parent for many years. A love for sports has taken him from participant to manager, to coach and to a ?loud mouth? spectator. He and Willmath have shared many of the same interests especially fishing.
In the autumn of their lives the time came to accept a smaller home with assistance. It did not come without tears of giving up their independence and their home of sixty years. After seventy-three years of marriage this new life would be an adventure to look forward to and a reality that would lift many burdens. Dave was a member of the Church of Christ in Rotan. He is preceded in death by his parents, one son (Richard in 1982), one son-in-law (Kent Westbrook), five brothers (Bill, Bun, Fant, Elbert and Robert Posey), three sisters (Mary Jane Posey, Effie Dennis and Louada Posey).
Survivors include his wife Willmath Posey; one son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Gloria Posey; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lanny and Dan Maeyers and Bobbie and Charles L. Miller; one daughter-in-law, Carol Posey; fourteen grandchildren, Patricia Osborn, Robert Posey, Julie Bibb, Jill Dennis, Jan Muery, Terry McWilliams, Cindy Putnam, David Posey, Jeff Posey, Kate Westbrook, Dixie Allen, S.J. Westbrook, Tom Miller and Merry Kay Brewer; thirty-nine great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
