Harold Zane Sweet
February 19, 1927 - January 27, 2016

Harold ''Zane'' Sweet passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2016. Graveside Services will be 10:00 am. Saturday, January 30, 2016, at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Borger, and a 11:00 am. Memorial Service following in the Chapel of First Baptist Church of Borger, with Pastor Charlie Morgan officiating. Services are under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Borger.

''Zane'' was born February 19, 1927 in Hulbert, Oklahoma to Samuel ''Oscar'' Sweet, and his wife Gertrude Foster Sweet. Zane grew up in the former Ray Community of Sequoyah, OK, and later attended Norwood Community School and Hulbert High School, Hulbert, OK. Zane honorably served his Country in the United States Navy, joining at age 17. While serving in WWII as a Navy Operations Mechanic, he was stationed in Hawaii and the Philippines, and fought in the Battles of Iwo Jima, Leyte, and Okinawa. Zane came to know the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior at the age of 19 years.

At the end of WWII, Zane became reacquainted with and married his former childhood classmate, Helen Irene Chapman, on July 27, 1946. The couple lived in Borger where he has resided since that time. His marriage of 67 years was blessed with three Sons and two Daughters. Helen passed away May 25, 2014.

Zane was employed with Phillips Petroleum Company working as an Operator in the Carbon Black Division from 1946 until his retirement in 1985. Using his talents a Master Builder, Zane also built and remodeled numerous homes in the Borger and surrounding community. As multi-talented master of many trades, he continued to supervise other projects up until his death.

Zane is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Helen Irene Sweet; two brothers, Roger Sweet and Jerry Sweet; and an infant son, Stephen Harold Sweet. Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Winegar and Marjorie Sommers; and two sons, Jeff Sweet and his wife, Jolynne, and Rodney Sweet and his wife, Carla. Among his survivors are eleven grandchildren, including Leesa Foster and her husband Will; Denise Mongold and her husband Terry; Michael Winegar and his wife Kathryn; Amy Dormer and her husband Jon; Jon Sommers and his wife Greta; Alissa Hedges and her husband Andy; Jenni Paynter and her husband Trevor; Julie Huff and her husband Jordan; Jessie Sweet and his wife Jenni; Logan Sweet, and Nathan Sweet, Trinette Jones and her husband, Clinton; Cassie Nail and her husband, Calvin; plus twenty-five great-grandchildren.

Also surviving him are two sisters, Kay Sweet and Beverly Combs; a cousin Bill Ashbrook and his wife, Marie, Sister-in-laws Ethel Chapman and Shan Donaho; plus numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Zane's family was very important to him; he especially enjoyed seeing and being with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Zane was a loving brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and a caring neighbor and friend. His family will treasure the memories of seeing him in daily devotions with Helen, carrying the family Bible in his walker, keeping it close. He was an avid hunter and fisherman always ready and willing to find the next catch. Zane gave willingly of his time and talents to help those in need. Zane will be lovingly remembered and admired for devotion to his wife and family, his optimism, keen wit, and fun sense of humor.

Always friendly, a tireless worker, demonstrating a generous nature, Zane's strength and unmatchable work ethic were his greatest gifts. They will forever be a source of inspiration to all who knew and loved him. Zane will be fondly remembered and greatly missed.
