Joseph Craig Clevenger, 85, passed away Monday, September 13, 2010, at Triumph Hospital in Webster, Texas.

Joe was born August 30, 1926 in Richwood, West Virginia. He was a sports enthusiast and excelled in several sports during High School. In 1944 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was in the 188th parachute infantry in Houshu, Japan. Joe desired to move to a warmer climate which brought him to the Galveston County where he lived for over 40 years in Arcadia. He was a merchant marine with the Maritime Union and a boilermaker with the Boilermakers Union Local #132. He had a great fondness for horses, raising and racing American quarter horses. Joe married Mary Custer on December 27, 1982 and was a devoted and loving husband. Joe loved his family and will be greatly missed. He also loved his dog "Boo Boo" and said "He was the best dog I ever had".

Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Arnet Ersol and Nina (Hathaway) Clevenger; brother, Richard Sydney "Jim" Clevenger.

Survivors include his loving wife, Mary Clevenger; step-sons, Joe Custer, Jr. and wife, Valerie, Cleveland "Boo" Custer and wife, Diane all of League City; grandchildren, Cassie and Robert Vanderford, Kristen Custer, Trey Custer, Coy Custer, Chase Custer, Vallen Custer and Carly Custer; great grandchildren, Evan Wynn and Adarra Lane Vanderford; brother, Jesse Clevenger of Wood County, West Virginia, Mike Clevenger of Nicholas County, West Virginia.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday, September 16, 2010, in the Chapel of Hayes Funeral Home with Reverend John Kappe officiating. Entombment will follow at Hayes Grace Memorial Park Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Joe Custer, Cleveland Custer, Chase Custer, Trey Custer, Coy Custer, Robert Vanderford and Evan Wynn.

Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday in the parlor of Hayes Funeral Home. A Vigil Service will begin at 7 p.m., Deacon Joe Kelly will officiate.
