LA MARQUE – Mr. W. A. (Bill) Manthei died on Sunday, July 16, 2006, at his home.

Born December 1, 1914, in Galveston, Mr. Manthei moved to Alta Loma in the spring of 1915. He was a 1932 graduate of Santa Fe High School and had worked at various jobs in his youth: farm hand, dairy hand, truck driver, longshoreman, construction worker and gandy dancer. He also spent two years as a seaman in the black gang in the Merchant Marine. Mr. Manthei began his employment with Pan American Transportation Company as a deck hand in 1936 and transferred into the Pan American Refinery operations department in 1937 as a utility man. He retired as shift foreman from Amoco Oil Company in 1975 after 38 1/2 years of service and had been a resident of La Marque and a member of Peace Lutheran Church since 1951.

Preceded in death by his high school sweetheart and wife of 64 1/2 years, Virginia, his survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, William E. and Rena Manthei; sisters, Helen Riggs and Eleanor McMakin; grandson, William C. Manthei and wife, Paula; granddaughter, Aimee Schultz; great granddaughters, Kelsey Schultz, Jennifer and Erin Manthei and beloved nieces, Cynthia Rankin, Janet Tramel, Melissa Pride and Marion Zachary.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home, Pastor Jay Simonsen officiating. A private entombment will be at Grace Memorial Park Cemetery.

Those who wish may make memorials in the form of donations to Peace Lutheran Church or to a children’s charity.

LA MARQUE -Mrs. Virginia C. Manthei passed from this life Tuesday evening, June 11, 2002, in Texas City.

Born February 25, 1916, in Galveston, Mrs. Manthei had been a resident of La Marque since 1951, previously of Galveston. She was a homemaker, a 1934 graduate of Santa Fe High School, a member of Peace Lutheran Church and enjoyed pottery, ceramics and decoupage.

Survivors include her husband of over 64 years, W.A. 'Bill' Manthei of La Marque; son and daughter-in-law,
William E. and Rena Manthei of Pearland; brother and sister-in-law, Haden and Ruby Coutorie of Houston; sister, Marion Zachary of Santa Fe; grandchildren, Chris Manthei and wife, Paula, Aimee R. Shultz; great-grandchildren, Kelsey Shultz, Jenna Manthei and numerous
nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 14, 2002, in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home with Pastor David Tessmann officiating. A private entombment will follow at Grace Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call from 1- 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, 10412 Texas Highway 6, 925-3501.
