February 9, 1919 - June 22, 1978
An era in the Crosbyton public schools came to an end Thursday when Marjorie L. Treat succumbed at 8:26 p.m. in Scott and White Hospital in Temple!
The veteran educator had completed 25 years as an instructor in the local public schools. Before boarding an air ambulance Monday of last week at Crosbyton Municipal Airport for the trip to Temple, Mrs. Treat received a handsome plaque which stated part: "In appreciation and recognition of 25 years of dedicated service as a member of our faculty, 1943-1978." Supt. Jerry Scott handed Mrs. Treat - affectionately known as "Marge" - plaque as a host of friends and fellow teachers watched.
Supt. Scott had presented Mrs. Treat with a 25 year pin during an end of school faculty meeting on May 30.
Realizing that her health would not permit her return to the classroom, Mrs. Treat had presented her resignation at the conclusion of the 1977-1978 school year. It was accepted "with deep regret" by the board of education during its June meeting.
Memorial services for Mrs. Treat, 59, were at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Crosbyton Church of Christ. Loyd Hall, minister, officiated.
Mrs. Treat had been ill 2 1/2 months and had been hospitalized all but four days since April 6.
Born February 9, 1919 in Bowie, the former Marjorie Lovelady was married to Les E. Treat on July 17, 1938, in Bowie.
She was graduated from Abilene Christian College (now Abilene Christian University) and began her professional career by teaching two years in Oklahoma and one year at Imperial, Tex.
The family moved to Crosbyton in 1952 from Imperial and Mrs. Treat was a private kindergarten teacher for one year. After joining the public school faculty, she taught fifth grade for one year and spent another year as a second grade instructor. For 10 years she taught third grade. The last 12 years of her career were spent as Title I remedial reading instructor.
Her principal during most of these years was her husband. L. E. Treat was primary elementary principal and lunchroom director for a number of years prior to his retirement following the 1972-73 term.
The Treats´ two daughters are following in their parents´ footsteps as educators. Jody Newman of Fort Worth is a teacher and Marilyn Trabold of Abilene plans to teach in the future.
Mrs. Treat was an active member of Crosbyton Church of Christ, Delta Kappa Gamma Society (a women teacher´s organization), Texas State Teachers Association, and National Education Association.
Survivors, in addition to her husband and two daughters include: one son, James Lyle Treat of Keller; one sister, Mrs. Carl (Kathryn) Maples of Jamaica; and six grandchildren.
Interment was made in Crosbyton Cemetery. Adams Funeral Home directed arrangements.
