Martha Steinert Herber

March 03, 1914-January 11, 2017
"Century Club"

Martha Herber passed away January 11, 2017. She was born on March 3, 1914. Martha was the second child born to George J. and Mary Elizabeth (Schoenhals) Steinert. She was raised on a farm south of Shattuck, Oklahoma with her sisters Alvena, Gertrude, Ruby, LaVeta, and brother George. Throughout her life, Martha often told stories about growing up on the farm, including chores she and her siblings shared, the hard times experienced during the Dust Bowl, and the fun they had by going to the neighbor's house on Saturday nights to listen to their radio. Martha went to a rural school with her sister Alvena, where they spoke only German, but the teacher spoke only English. The family later moved to a farm west of Follett, Texas, where Martha started and graduated from high school.

Martha married Jake J. Herber in 1933. They farmed and ranched just east of Follett until Jake passed away in 1979. To this union Kathy Diane was born. Martha and Kathy were baptized at the Follett Baptist Church where Martha was a faithful member for over 60 years. She served on mission boards, taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, and sang in the choir. She was a volunteer Pink Lady at the hospital in Shattuck for over 40 years.

Martha was happiest when she was helping and caring for others. Her rural upbringing during difficult times helped mold her strong character and her strong faith in God that carried her through life's challenges. She had a sweet, humble and gracious spirit, and we never heard her complain. Martha was a model of strength through Christ and never let anything get her down. In Martha's well-worn Bible were these words:
"this isn't death-it's glory
it isn't darkness-it's light
it isn't stumbling, groping, or even faith-it's sight
it isn't grief-it's having the last tears wiped away."
On this past Christmas day Kathy was reading the Bible to Martha and Martha said: "I saw the Lord shining." Martha hadn't spoken more than one word for several weeks. She leaves us a heritage of a gracious Christian life well lived.

Martha is survived by her sister, LaVeta Buchner; her daughter, Kathy Diane and husband, Anthony Wyand. Her grandchildren are: James Russell and wife, Elizabeth Wyand, Susan Diane and husband, Mathew Evans, Taylor Jake and wife, Marni Wyand. Her great-grandchildren are: Michael and wife, Amy Evans, Jake Wyand, John and wife, Melissa Evans, Sam Wyand, Luke Wyand, Lauren Wyand, and Sydney Wyand. Her great-great-grandchild is Quade Evans. Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Jake, her parents, three of her sisters, and her brother.
