AUSTIN - Flossie Aline Burke, 90, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in First Christian Church in Borger. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery in Borger by Brown Funeral Directors of Borger.

Flossie Aline Burke died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, while a resident at the Plaza at Querencia in Austin. She will return to her "real home" in the Texas Panhandle, where she grew up, married, raised a family and spent nearly 60 years of her life.

Mrs. Burke was known to her friends in Borger and California as "Aline," but later in life to friends in Austin as "Flossie." She was born Dec. 29, 1918, in a dugout home on homesteaded land near Roy, N.M.. She was the middle child of Grover and Emma Thornton, who were early settlers and longtime residents of Borger. Her early childhood, after New Mexico, was spent in a small town in southwest Arkansas, where her Dad was the owner and operator of a sawmill. The family moved in 1926 to the oil boom town of Borger, where she attended a one-room school and graduated from Borger High School in 1936.

Aline met the love of her life, Jack W. Burke Sr., while working as a cashier at the local movie theater in Borger. They were married in 1939 and raised their three children in Phillips, where they lived in the same home for more than 40 years. Her husband retired from Phillips Petroleum Co., and they moved to Southern California in 1982. For 15 years, Aline and her husband thoroughly enjoyed the California retirement life and traveled extensively. Soon after her husband passed away in 1995, Flossie "Aline" moved to the Austin area mainly to be closer to her daughters and their families. She was a resident of The Island at Lago Vista and The Summit prior to her move to the Querencia at Barton Creek.

Mrs. Burke was a lifetime Christian, devoted wife, loving mother, longtime Sunday school teacher, respected and deeply loved by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was loved by many lifelong friends she developed over the years. She was a lifetime member of the Order of Eastern Star No. 811 in Borger and was a very active Christian Church in Borger for more than 40 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Burke Sr.; and five siblings: three brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include a son, Jack W. Burke Jr. and wife Loretta of Yuba City, Calif.; two daughters, Louise Kaye Banda and husband Leroy of Spicewood and Loretta Sue Fitzpatrick and husband Edward of Highlands; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
