The fifth asphyxiation case this winter resulted in the deaths of an elderly Borger couple when their bodies were discovered last night in an airtight bedroom at 111 West Grand.

Mr. and Mrs. Earl E. Carley were believed dead about seven hours when a daughter discovered their bodies in a bedroom. All Windows in the room were closed and a heater was burning.

Death was caused by a lack of oxygen resulting in an over-accumulation of carbon monoxide.

Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Godfrey, 1317 Clayton, discovered their bodies around 7:50 p.m. Earlier that morning around 11:30 a.m., Mrs. Godfrey had met her mother and father in downtown Borger. At that time Carley said he was not feeling well and was going home to bed. Shortly after noon Mrs. Godfrey had telephoned her mother and father. It was the last word heard from the asphyxiation victims. Both were found dead in bed.

Survivors of Mrs. Carley include two nieces, Mrs. Aubrey Taylor, San Diego, California and Mrs. Nola Fears, Dallas; a daughter, Mrs. J.H. Godfrey, Borger; and two grandchildren.

Carley is survived by his daughter, Borger; two brothers, Howard Carley, Floratown, California and John Carley, Spokane, Washington; four sisters, Mrs. Eva Hoffman, Mrs. Alfred Rogers, Mrs. Alma Thomsen, all of Green Acres, Washington, and Mrs. Frank Zeman, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He is also survived by two grandchildren.

Carley was 68-year-old and both he and Mrs. Carley were active church workers in the Borger First Baptist Church.

Joint funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m., Thursday at the First Baptist Church of Borger. Dr. Winfred Moore will officiate assisted by Rev. J.N. Hunt of San Antonio. Interment will follow in the Highland Park Cemetery.

Other than yesterday's asphyxiations, three others were recorded asphyxiated, in late October. Mrs. J.E. Todd, 404 Coble, suffered asphyxiation while attempting to rescue Mrs. Jake Lyons and her three-year-old daughter, 915-B Roosevelt, who were found in a state of semi-asphyxiation in their apartment. All three were revived, however, making the Carley couple the first fatally asphyxiated victims this winter. City police officers investigated the incident.
