Obituary:
Martha A. HUMMER, daughter of Elder David and Leah KIMMEL, was born January 1, 1858, near Brookville, Ohio, and died at her home near Booker, Texas, January 4, 1931, aged 73 years and 4 days. When five years old, she with her parents emigated to Jefferson County, Kansas, but two years later they moved to Sangmon County, Illinois, where she grew to womanhood. Here she married Clement S. HUMMER, September 14, 1879. The following year they moved to Kansas. This home was blessed with eleven children, five of whom survive her. They are Mayme E. HUMMER, M. S. HUMMER, D. D. HUMMER, and Mrs. Rhoda STOLLINGS of Booker and Mrs. Coy TROUTT of Follett.
Forty-six years ago she united with the Church of the Brethren ad was a devoted member until death. The faith she had in the Savior was especially comforting to her during her lingering illness. Many times she expressed herself as being ready to meet her Savior.
She, with her husband and family. came to this country in December, 1905, and had been in their home near Booker since 1906. She has experienced the hardships common to our pioneers, but through it all she maintained an optimistic outlook on life. She was truly a mother in the home and a neighbor in the community. The virtuous woman described in Prov. 31:10-31, could be applied to her by the life she lived.
She leaves to mourn her departure, besides the five children, her husband, two sisters, one brother, and eighteen grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted in the Christian church at Booker by Brother H. F. Crist, pastor of the Brethren Church of Wichita, Kansas, and assisted by Rev. Lackey, pastor of the Booker Methodist church. The body was laid to rest in the Fairmont Cemetery near Follett.
