Deane D. Friend, 84, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, in Odessa.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Borger Church of God with Rev. Buck Lawley, pastor of Perryton Church of God, officiating. Interment will be in "The Garden of Hope" at Highland Park Cemetery under the direction of Minton-Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.

Mr. Friend was born on July 1, 1917, in Hugo, Colo. He was a resident of Borger for 54 years. He was a car salesman and member of the Church of God. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel Ray Friend, on Sept. 14, 1965, and his second wife, Abbie Hodges Vaughn Friend, on Nov. 2, 1998.

Survivors include two daughters, Joan Bishop of Odessa and Deanna Schaffer of Arlington; two step-daughters, Beth Ann Sims of Stinnett and Connie Fulce of Fairfield, Calif.; a sister, Kathy Beach of Mount Vernon; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice House Foundation, 903 N. Sam Houston, Odessa, Texas 79761 or to the American Cancer Society, 811 Central Dr., Odessa, Texas 79761.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Casket bearers will be Stanley Aylor, Bob Berry, Dean Berry, Cecil Hopkins, Jim Hopkins and Jerry Smith.
