A military funeral will be conducted by the VFW 2:30 Friday at the Veterans Foreign Wars hall for Charles D. Gilbert, 52, owner of the Snooker Club, who died 12:30 Wednesday morning in the North Plains hospital after a lingering illness.
Gilbert, who resided at 208 East First st., came to Borger in 1926 from Albany, Texas. He was born in Mountpelier [sic], Ind. and was married in Lawson, Okla. He served with the Rainbow division in World War I. He was county chairman in obtaining employment for returning veterans after the war.
Gilbert was a former commander of the local Veterans Foreign Wars Post 1789 and was at one time post adjutant of the Hutchinson County American Legion Post 412.
Gilbert will be laid in view Friday at the VFW hall, and that organization will supply his pallbearers.
Survivors include his wife, Merle Gilbert, Borger; four daughters, Mrs. Robert Duncan, Mrs. Frank Turbett, Mrs. Jimmy Wright and Peggy Gibert [sic], all of Borger; three sons; Harvey Buddy Gilbert, Panhandle; Charles D. Gilbert, Jr., and Tommy Dale both of Borger; four brothers: Donald Gilbert, Virgl [sic], Marion and Ernest of Ft. Wayne; a sister, Mrs. A.V. Foeihover [sic], and his father, Frank M. Gilbert, also of Fort Wayne.
The Rev Paul Cullen, pastor of the First Baptist church will officiate at the services. Poston-Simpson funeral home is directing the funeral. Interment will be in the Highland Park cemetery.
