Final rites will be conducted this afternoon at 2 o'clock for Mrs. J.E. Gipson, 68, who died after an explosion of unknown origin in her home.

Mrs. Gipson died in the North Plains hospital Friday night after the early morning blast and fire which destroyed her home on 415 Alabama street.

Four neighbors helped pull the victim from beneath the falling debris shortly after the explosion at 2:50 o'clock Friday morning. Those who came to her aid were Mr. and Mrs. W.R. McGee, Sam Mercer, and C.W. Winks.

Although a resident of Borger for most of the last 16 years, Mrs. Gipson had just returned from Brownfield two days ago to live in her Borger home.

The cause of the explosion remains a mystery. According to Fire Chief Jim Miller, an investigation showed that the gas line leading to the house was cut off at the meter. He also discounted that a leak in the line away from the explosion since the floor remained intact, indicating that there was no gas beneath the structure. Three Borger fire trucks were called to the scene.

Adding to the mystery was the fact that Mrs. Gipson was fully clad in street clothes although the blast went off at 2:50 a.m.

Miller added that any gas present would have blown up at the turning of an electric switch or any other spark.

Mrs. Gipson was preceded in death by her husband about a year ago. The couple came here from Durant, Okla. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Northside Baptist church in Brownfield.

Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. J.W. Damron of Borger, Mrs. Charlie Robison of Bennington, Okla., Mrs. J.W. Lucas of Brownfield, Mrs. Everett Gage of Witharral, Tex., and Mrs. J.B. Hughes of Borger; six sons, Eldon of Amarillo, Talmage of Brownfield, E.H. (Doc) Gipson and T.L. (Buster) Gipson, both of Borger, R.A. of Oklahoma City, and Prentice of Boulder, Colo.; four sisters, Mrs. O. E. Raynes of Brownfield, Mrs. D.N. Cato, Wichita Falls, Mrs. S.W. Fielding of Memphis, and Mrs. F.G. Carter of Burleson, Texas.; six brothers, G.W. Prentice of Durant, Lon Prentice of Cleora, Okla., Precely and R.L. Prentice, of Denison, and Sam and Alphy of Bokchita, Okla.; 30 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at the Borger Fellowship Baptist church with the Rev. Bill Frerking officiating. He will be assisted by the Rev. E.L. Cave of the Brownfield Northside Baptist church and the Rev. Bobby Dwiggins of the local North Side Baptist church.

Burial will be in the local cemetery.
