Funeral services for Robert L. Grimes, 78, prominent Borger banker and civic leader, are to be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday from First Baptist Church.

The officiating minister will be the Rev. James G. Glenn, associate pastor of First United Presbyterian Church, Richardson. He will be assisted by the Rev. Perry Bovee, interim pastor of the local First Presbyterian Church and the Rev. Joe Dee Ray, pastor of the First Baptist Church.

Interment in Highland Park Cemetery will be under the direction of Ed Brown & Sons Funeral Directors.

Active casketbearers are David M. Warren, Richard Bryant, David Thompson, Robert W. Wilson, Phil Green, Danny Blain and Will S. Carter.

Honorary casketbeares are directors of Panhandle Bank & Trust Company - R.B. Takewell, E.C. Britain Jr., L.D. Patton, W.E. Neill, George McKenna, Robert R. Lindsey, E.J. Lewis Sr. and Barney Andress.

Also, directors of First Savings and Loan Company - Buster Caviness, Jerry Brice, Bobby Dawson, Weldon Jolly, and Fritz Thompson; also Ralph E. Bayless, and George N. McDaniel.

Mr. Grimes died at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday in North Plains Hospital. He was born in Temple, son of a banker, and began his banking career at the age of 17 at the First State Bank of Bronte. He moved to Panhandle in 1926 and to Borger 10 years later, where he became president of the Panhandle State Bank in 1940. He retired in 1966 as chairman of the board. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Grimes was known as the "Barbecue King of the Panhandle," a title he had earned by preparing the meat for the annual Hutchinson County Livestock Shows, and other civic gatherings.

A charter member of the Borger Noon Lions Club, Mr. Grimes was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and the North Plains Knife and Fork Club. He was a director and organizer of the First Savings and Loan Co. of Borger. He served on numerous civic committees.

Surviving are his wife, Tillie of the home, 1700 Takewell; a son, Robert Elvin Grimes of Bartlesville; two daughters, Mrs. Lorene Collman, Mrs. Dortha Sanchez, both of Seattle, Wash.; sister, Mrs. Minnie Hartsfield, Altus, Okla.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Bank officials said today that Panhandle Bank & Trust Company, the First Savings and Loan Association and First National Bank will close at noon Friday.
