George Ithaca, proprietor of the Isom cafe, thought his wife was "just fooling," he said, when she was about to drink carbolic acid at 1:30 yesterday afternoon. "If I had thought she was going to do it, I could have stopped her," he said, "but she said she was going to do it before, and I didn't think she meant it yesterday."

Mrs. Ithaca took the poison. She died at midnight in Clutter hospital, leaving four children, ranging in age from 4 to 13 years.

The woman sent one of her little daughters to a drug store with a note for 50 cents worth of the acid, on pretense that the carbolic was wanted for use in water to be used in washing the face of one of the children. As 50 cents worth of the acid is a large order, the druggist cut the quantity to 25 cents worth.

After the poison had been taken by his wife, Ithaca tasted the drops of liquid at the mouth of the bottle. He said he was unable to find a doctor immediately by telephone, and that a delay of 20 minutes resulted.

Mrs. Ithaca was taken to the hospital in the Carver ambulance. Stomach pump and antidotes were used to save her life, but to no avail.

The Ithacas came here seven years ago, and since then they have been in the restaurant business. She drank the poison in their home at the cafe.

The children are Laverne Elizabeth, 13, Jean Merie, 10, Doris Georgia, 7, and George, Jr., 4. One of Mrs. Ithaca's sisters, Mrs. John Stanley, lives in Borger. Other sisters, Mrs. V.W. Crowell and Mrs. Gus Hogburg, are in Leadville, Colo. In Leadville also are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Swan Pearson, and three brothers, Richard, Oscar and Clarence. George Pearson, another brother, is in Columbia, South America.
