*Obituary
Former Hutchinson County sheriff Dale Lane died yesterday of an apparent heart attack at the age of 62.

The Borger pioneer died in Slaton, where he had operated a private business after his retirement from law enforcement. News of his death came in a phone call from his wife Harriett to his brother in Borger, Keith Lane.

He is survived by his wife; one son, Jimmy Dale Lane; three brothers, Rex of Ralston, Okla., Wade of Los Angeles, Calif., and Keith of Borger; and three grandchildren.

The body is resting at Sanders Funeral Home in Lubbock, pending completion of funeral arrangements.

Dale Lane came to Borger in November, 1926, and was first employed by the Panhandle Power and Light Company. He became a policeman in 1931, serving under Chief of Police Charlie Price. Chief Price died later that year in the explosion of a truck loaded with nitro-glycerin he was using in his work as a well shooter.

Lane was transferred from the police department to the constable's department and in 1939 became chief deputy sheriff under Vern Underhill. Following this he served as chief of police for the city of Borger.

He was elected sheriff in 1941 and served until January 1, 1947.

Lane was known as a tough law enforcement officer and is remembered by old-timers as a good man to have had around during Borger's violent early years.

He said good-bye to Borger when his term as sheriff ended and went on to serve with Oklahoma Department of Public Safety and the sheriff's department at Big Spring.

In 1954 Lane left the law enforcement profession and became a restaurant owner. He opened "Pheasant Grill" restaurants in Lamesa, Big Spring, and Andrews and personally operated the grill in Andrews. He spent his last years living in Slaton.

In visits back to Borger in his later years, Lane always remarked on the changes in the onetime boom town. During his 1968 visit, he was able to watch the downtown beautification project begin where once there had been only tents and a mud street.

He commented at the time, that when the trees and shrubs grew up, it would be a restful and leisurely place to shop. His pleasure never flagged in looking over the town he had once protected.
