Rosary service for D. J. Hlavaty, 86, of Woodrow will be 7 p.m. tonight, August 20, 2006 in Englunds Chapel.

Resurrection Mass will be 2:30 p.m. Monday, August 21, 2006 in St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Nicolas Rendon officiating. Interment will be Englewood Cemetery under the direction of Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton.

D. J. went with his Lord August 18, 2006. He was born November 24, 1919 in Caldwell. He moved to the Woodrow area in January 1920. On January 21, 1943, D. J. married Cornelia Katherine "Nell" Denzer in Slaton. D. J. was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and a 3rd degree life member of the Slaton Knights of Columbus Council 2571. He farmed all his life in the Woodrow/Slaton area and was a partner in the Posey Gin.

D. J. was preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Monica Hlavaty; brothers, Andrew and Arthur Lee Hlavaty; and sisters, Madeline Humphery and Milada Heinrich.

His survivors include his wife, Nell of Woodrow; sons, Tommy and wife Pam of Lubbock, Danny and wife Monika of Ransom Canyon, Doug and wife Valerie, and Lance and wife Barbara, all of Woodrow; daughter, Debbie and husband Steve Simons of Houston; sister, Ida Lee Bednarz of Slaton; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Cornelia "Nell" Hlavaty, 87, went home to Jesus on Oct. 27, 2011. Rosary will be 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, at 7:30 p.m. in Englunds Chapel. Celebration of life Mass will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011, in Slaton's St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Englewood Cemetery under the direction of Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton.

Nell was born in Winterburg, Germany, on Oct. 1, 1924. She came to America through Ellis Island when she was three years old with her parents and siblings. They lived in Chicago until she was 12, and then they made their home in the Slaton area. Nell married D.J. Hlavaty on Jan. 21, 1943. They were married for 63 years and, along with their five children, made a beautiful home and life on the family farm near Woodrow. D.J. preceded her in death on Aug. 12, 2006.

Nell was an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, Altar Society and was the church soloist for over 30 years singing at wedding, funerals and church holidays. Nell will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her caring abilities, and her singing, which she shared all her life and gave so much joy to so many people.

Nell's survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Debbie Simons and Steve from Houston; four sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Pam, Danny and Monika, Doug and Valerie, and Lance and Barbara, all of the Lubbock area; one brother, Walter Denzer of Slaton; sisters-in-law, Ida Lee Bednarz and Mildred Denzer of Slaton; with eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
