Funeral services for Edgar Chance, who passed away Friday evening at 11:05 p.m. will be at the Broadway Church of Christ on Tuesday March 14, 2006 at 2 p.m. with Joe Barnett, Harvie Pruitt and Dick Moser officiating. Family visitation will be in the Garden Room of the church Monday evening from 5-7 p.m. Burial will be in the cemetery at Ralls.

Edgar Earl Chance, Sr. was born September 17, 1919, to Lewis W. and Mattie (Benton) Chance in Ralls, Texas. He continued to live there until the family moved to Lubbock June 1st, 1935. He graduated from Lubbock High School in 1938 and entered Texas Tech, where he graduated in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree. After a few weeks of teaching Agriculture at Ralls High School, he was called into the service where he became an officer in the Navy and became the captain of the USS Pelican during World War II. When the war ended, he returned home and married (Sidney) Imogene Cate of Paducah on January 10, 1945. She preceded him in death on October 18, 2000. The Chances moved to Sudan in January of 1946 and he was agriculture teacher at Sudan for 15/ years. He was selected to serve on the first Board of Trustees of Lubbock Christian University when the original board expanded outside the city of Lubbock. The family moved to Lubbock in 1961 where he started the agriculture department at Lubbock Christian University. He returned to public education as the junior high principal at Ralls for eight years. He was also asked to serve again on the Board of Trustees at LCU. He finished his teaching career as math teacher at Atkins Junior High School in Lubbock ISD.

He was elected County Commissioner, Precinct 1, in 1976 and served one term. During that term the decision was made to build a teaching hospital in Lubbock and his name is on the cornerstone of University Medical Center.

He was a member of the Broadway Church of Christ for over 50 years, and served as an elder for over 32 years. He had also served as an elder in the Sudan Church of Christ for 10 years.

He was a long-time Rotarian of 45 years which included 22 years of perfect attendance, serving as president of the Sudan chapter, and receiving the Paul Harris Fellow. He was also a long-time farmer in Crosby County, a life-time member of the Texas State Teacher's Association, a member of the Retired Teacher's Association and the Retired Administrator's Association.

He is survived by two sons, Edgar E. (Eddie) Chance, Jr. (and wife Carol) of Slaton, and Sidney Richard Chance of Lubbock; three grandsons, Ed Chance III, of Carlsbad, N.M., Max Neel Chance (and wife Nicole), of Long Island, N.Y., and Casey Chance of Vail, Colo.; two brothers, Raymond of Ralls, and Bill (and wife Pat) of Cloudcroft, N.M.; one sister-in-law, Lorene Yowell of Raymond, N.H.; and one brother-in-law, Forest Creamer of Paducah.

He is also survived by a very dear special friend, Mrs. Evelyn Moore, who has been a close companion and friend in recent years.

He is also survived by several (11) nieces and (14) nephews, as well as a host of extended family and friends. He came from a large family and was preceded in death by sisters, Lois Chance, Louise Callaghan, Juanita Moncrief, and Francys Whadford; and brothers, L.W. and Cecil; as well as his parents.
