W. E. “Red” Berry, of Seminole, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 20 at his home on his farm in Gaines County surrounded by family and friends. The family received visitors at Ratliff Funeral Home in Seminole Thursday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m.. Services were held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Doss Chapel at the Gaines County Cemetery south of Seminole.
Red was born to Ernest and Gladys Berry on a farm near Eola on October 3, 1926. He spent his early years in Tom Green County and graduated from San Angelo High School. At age 15, Red went to Texas A&M University.
World War II began in 1941 and at age 18, Red was drafted into the U.S Army where he obtained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. After World War II he continued his studies at A&M and graduated with a degree in Animal Husbandry in 1946. He was also called back to the Army during the Korean War and was proud to have served his country in two wars.
Red met the love of his life, Gene Eloise Hardy in Stanton in 1950 and they married in 1952. Red and Gene moved to Seminole and used his GI bill to buy their first farm. They farmed for many years before Red decided to move into real estate and he opened his office in Denver City in 1980. He remained active in real estate and farming the rest of his life.
Red was an avid tennis player, snow skier, and loved to play dominoes and cards any time, any place. He became a licensed pilot and bought and flew a Cessna 182. Red and Gene traveled the world together visiting many countries in Europe and South America, as well as Australia and New Zealand.
Red is survived by two sons Ernest Berry and fiancé Cathy Cates Ivy, of Lubbock and Richard Berry and wife Sharon of Buda; five grandchildren Jamie Paquin and husband Ty Kostrinsky of Seminole, Leigh-Anne Osten and husband Brad and greatgranddaughter Hadleigh of Schertz, Austin Berry and wife Davonne of Fanwood, NJ, J.R. Berry and fiancé, Margaret of Chicago, IL, and Kaci Berry of Buda.
He is also survived by his brother, John Berry and wife Melody of Fort Stockton and his brother-in-law Jimmy Hardy and wife Mary Ann of Smyer and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. And he is also survived by Rosie Roberts of Hobbs and his wonderful caregiver, Emma Frier of Seminole.
He is preceded in death by his wife Gene Berry and daughter Ann Berry Wilson. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to your favorite charity in Red’s name.
