JACKSON ELFER DIES; SUFFERED IN STORM
Illness Dates From Exposure to Weather the Night Galveston was Partly Destroyed.

Jackson Elfer, aged 63 years 10 months, died at 10:35 o'clock Friday morning at his home on the Harrisburg Road, terminating a period of ill health dating from the night of the Galveston storm of 1900.

He is survived by his widow, one son, J. C Elfer of New Orleans; three daughters, Mrs. T. K. Kier, Mrs. George L. Glass, and Miss Nora Elfer of Houston.

The funeral will be held from the residence at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Rev. T. J. Windham will officiate. Interment will take place In Evergreen Cemetery. The pallbearers are W. T. Glass, Judd M. Lewis, Preston King, M. L. Grymes, W. A. Kirby, and T. Kaufhold.

Mr. Elfer moved to Texas from Louisiana years ago and was intimately connected with the agricultural development of this section of the State. He was born June 12, 1849, in Terrebonne Parish Louisiana, where up to the time of his removal to Texas he was engaged in sugarcane planting. He was married to Miss Agnes Celeste Tanner at Terrebonne in 1870. On moving to Texas he established at Erin and was In his home, located on the bald prairie at that place, the night of the storm. His wife was in Houston visiting their married daughter and he and his two baby daughters were alone in the house. Realizing that the house could not withstand the force of the storm, they took refuge in the open. He lashed his two children to a tree that he had planted some year previously. They were all saved, but he never fully recovered the effects of that night's ordeal.
