BORGER, Sept. 2 - (AP) - Charley Payton, former Borger policeman, died in a hospital here at 4:30 o'clock this morning from bullet wounds received in a mysterious shooting at his home Saturday night.
A bullet which struck him in the back just below the left shoulder, penetrating the region of the heart, caused his death. He was shot twice as an assailant whose identity is closely guarded by authorities fired four times at him from the dark.
The shooting occurred as Payton was working on the back porch of his home.

BORGER, Sept. 7 (AP) - A preliminary hearing was set for today for a man arrested at a hotel here in connection with the shooting of Charles Payton, former Borger policeman, last week. Payton died Sunday.

BORGER, Sept. 11, (AP) - L.D. Compton, charged with murder after the slaying of Charles Payton, former policeman, Sept. 1, was held for grand jury action today after a hearing before John R. Smith, justice of the peace. His bond was set at $3,500 and he was returned to jail.
