Jerry was born on September 18, 1930 in Huntsville, Walker County, Texas to Wilbert Viola Wooderson and Carl Lewis Gaines.

He lived on a farm in his childhood, where he loved gardening. He played football in high school and later attended SMU before he joined the United States Marines where he served from 1950 to 1954, involved in the Korean Conflict. His rank was Sergeant.

Jerry retired after 40 years of service as drilling superintendent with Murphy Oil Company. He served his community as a member of Shriners, the Marine Corps League and was a Scottish-Rite Mason. He was Master of Burke Masonic Lodge and earned the Golden Trowel.

He also enjoyed hunting, playing cards, golfing, making people smile. He loved the piney woods and the blue skies. His proudest moments were when his daughters were born.

Most of Jerry's brothers and sisters preceded him in death.

He was married to Cecilia Ernestine (Haley) Gaines who preceded him in death. Mr. Gaines died on September 17, 2015 in Diboll, Angelina County, Texas at the age of 84.
