Larry Bee McWhorter was born on May 12, 1947 in Bedias, Grimes County, Texas to Beason Bynum McWhorter and Myra Eloise Ballard. He grew up in Madisonville, Texas.
Larry graduated from Madisonville High School in 1965. He went on to the Texas A&M University, where he was a member of the Corp of Cadets, and graduated with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. Following graduation, he worked as an engineer at NASA's Johnson Space Center for 35 years. During his time at NASA, Larry was an engineer and manager of Guidance, Navigation, and Control for the Space Shuttle program, and later became a director of Space Station Integration. After retiring from NASA, Larry worked as an engineer and manager in Boeing's aerospace division here in Houston and in Huntsville, Alabama.
He enjoyed sports and was a part-time referee for local baseball and softball leagues. He loved to attend baseball games and watch his beloved Aggies' football games. In his spare time he enjoyed collecting baseball cards and spending time with family and friends.
Larry was also a devoted Christian and deacon. He taught Sunday School and ran the Children's Church at South Avenue Baptist Church, along with his wife, Karen, for many years. He became a mentor to many young people during that time. He later attended First Baptist Church in Pasadena. He had a very kind heart and quick wit and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Mr. Mc Whorter died March 22, 2013 at the age of 65 in Pasadena, Harris County, Texas, where he was a longtime resident. Larry is the beloved husband of Karen and father of Amanda and Seena.
