Joseph L. (Lon) Shields, 84, veteran Panhandle peace officer and longtime Borger resident died Saturday morning in a Dumas hospital where he had been confined by serious illness for the past two months.

Shields was a member of the Borger Police Department for over six years and served as constable of Precinct Two in Hutchinson county for two terms before age necessitated his retirement.

He also had served as sheriff and deputy sheriff of Collingsworth County before moving to Borger in October, 1946, shortly after the end of World War II. He made his home in the Panhandle for 45 years.

Active in civic work and a booster of the community, the veteran lawman often told people he met that he came to Borger for the opportunity which was here for better wages and to make his home.

He had lived in Dumas for almost three years prior to his death.

Shields was born at Water Valley, Miss., May 19, 1887 and moved to Oklahoma before that Indian Territory became a state. He was a cattleman before he entered the law enforcement profession which he followed until his retirement several years ago.

In Borger he made his home at 119 Bunton.

Shields was a member of the Masonic Lodge and of the Baptist Church. While he had only a limited education, he was well known for his application of what one old timer termed "common sense and duty to justice and respect for law and order,' in his professional duties.

He called the Canadian River Dam project the "greatest thing that could happen to our part of the country."

Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Ida Hickman Shields of the home, whom he married in 1908 in the Oklahoma Indian Territory; four daughters, Mrs. J.S. (Sadie) Widner and Mrs. J.D. (Lorene) Carter, both of Dumas, Mrs. J.T. (Texine) Teems, Midland, and Mrs. D.W. (Marie) Dyer, Brookville, Kans.; two sons, Buster C. Shields, Borger and Robert L. Shields, Midland.

Eighteen grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services have been tentatively set for 2 p.m. Monday at North Hills Baptist Church, the Rev. E.E. Taylor, pastor, and the Rev. Clarence Bishop, Dumas, officiating.

Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery under the direction of Simpson Funeral Home.
